Allen was born in Pickstown, South Dakota, in 1948. Childhood in Indiana and Maryland. Bachelor of Arts, Biology, 1970, Manchester College (Indiana). Married Debora Brodrick in 1971. West Virginia resident since 1973. Four sons, ages 28, 25, 23, 18. One granddaughter. Work experience in teaching, social work, heavy construction, nursing home administration, and mental health administration. Master's Degree in Theology and Public Policy, 1996, Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary (Philadelphia). Charles G. Finney Scholar with Evangelicals for Social Action (ESA) 1993-94, under Dr. Ron Sider, with responsibilities in the start-up of the Evangelical Environmental Network (EEN) which is one of four partners of the National Religious Partnership on the Environment. Charter member of the Steering Committee of the Religious Campaign for Forest Conservation. Facilitated Opening the Book of Nature retreats in six states. Produced Creation Song 1995-2000, a weekly 30 minute radio program aired on three local stations for five years utilizing taped interviews with local and national guests on themes involving Christian advocacy for environmental and human justice issues. Director since 2001 of Pocahontas County Free Libraries, one of three recipients of the prestigious 2003 National Library Service Award of the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
